Shawnee, Kansas Google is not wasting any time with the expansion of its super-fast Google Fiber service. The search giant announced this week that gigabit Internet will be coming to the Kansas City suburb of Shawnee.
On Thursday evening, the Shawnee City Council in Kansas voted to bring Google Fiber to the city, Google's Rachel Hack announced in a blog post.
Hack said Google was "impressed by Shawnee's vision to keep their citizens informed and involved using the Internet," including a modernized city website with crime maps, fiscal reports, and streamed audio of city council meetings.
"The ultra-high speed Google fiber network will enhance the quality of life for people in Shawnee by providing faster access to essential digital resources," Mayor Jeff Meyers said in a statement. "This will grow and strengthen Shawnee's competitive advantage in the years to come."
Google does not have a firm date for when Google Fiber will start rolling out in Shawnee, which has about 64,000 residents; "we still have a lot of planning and engineering work to do," Hack said. In the meantime, the city of Shawnee has posted a Google Fiber FAQ on its website.
Google Fiber is already available in "fiberhoods" throughout Kansas City, and will also be coming to the nearby city of Olathe, Kansas.
The announcement comes shortly after the city council in Provo, Utah also voted to allow Google Fiber in the city. There, Google will be purchasing and upgrading the existing, city-built iProvo fiber network, which has struggled financially in recent years. The search giant hopes to have Google Fiber up and running in Provo by year's end.
Google Fiber will also come to Austin, Texas in 2014.
Google is not the only company exploring gigabit Internet. A small telco in rural Vermont, Vtel, plans to halve Google's $70 per month Google Fiber offer, providing gigabit services for just $35. CenturyLink will also connect 48,000 Omaha homes and businesses with its new high-speed gigabit Internet pilot. For more, see the slideshow above.
