Atheer Labs has just demonstrated a pair
of glasses that allows access to a mobile 3D platform, combining
augmented reality with a natural human user interface based on gestures.
These recent months have seen a great deal of development in wearable technologies. In the last few weeks the first versions of Google Glass have
created a real buzz. The new pair of glasses that Google has developed
feeds everyone’s fantasy by integrating augmented reality into our
day-to-day lives together with its use of voice commands to manage
functionality. Other types of smart glasses such as Epson Moverio and Vuzix Smart Glasses have also attracted attention. Recently the All Things Digital 11conference, witnessed another cutting-edge demonstration likely to make everyone sit up and take notice when Atheer Labs,
based in Mountain View, California, presented its own prototype for
smart glasses. What is special about these smart specs is that they use,
explains the Atheer press release, “stereoscopic 3D, seamless human
interactions and augmented reality to create the first-ever natural
human interface where users compute on the go with the swipe of a hand
or the flick of a finger, and never have to touch a physical screen.”
Fusing an interactive digital layer into the real world
This means that a truly mobile 3D platform can now be integrated into our everyday lives. Atheer Labs offers the experience of a new dimension by integrating the digital world into the physical world. The integrated 3D mobile platform enables the user to interact with an entire digital ecosystem even when s/he’s walking down the street, having a coffee or talking to a friend. Atheer's technology is unlike anything that currently exists in the industry, “taking the mobile interface from 2D to an interactive 3D platform centered on human actions,” claims company founder Souleiman Itani. The platform also breaks the display size barrier and has created “an experience that is more immersive than a tablet, and more portable than a smartphone (…) a wearable, portable 3D platform for the first time.”
Smooth AR experience
Atheer’s 3D interface is completely immersive and gives the user access to a lot of information in a smooth amd highly intuitive way. The system uses a natural, direct form of interacting with software elements displayed in three dimensions. The user can do everything from straightforward navigation on the Internet to gaming, and can also interact in health and educational activities. Atheer’s technology uses “complex algorithms, software and hardware to provide the best form factor and user experience,” says the company. AtheerCore™, for example, is the technology which enables detection of movement and gestures, adjusting to each person's specific characteristics. Retinal Mapping™ and Vision Optimization™dynamically improve users' visual experience on the platform. The platform allows users to make use of standard 2D Android applications and has the capability to be integrated with any operating system. Like Google Glass, the Atheer glasses are only just getting started. Their currently rather bulky format is one aspect that will need some refinement before the product is launched on to the shelves.
